Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania

Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania may be granted to a person, provided he meets the following conditions:

  • has passed the state language exam,
  • at the time of submitting the application, have a document confirming the right to live permanently in the Republic of Lithuania,
  • has lived in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania for the last 10 years,
  • has a legitimate means of livelihood,
  • has passed the exam on the basics of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania,
  • is a stateless person or is a citizen of a state, according to the law of which the citizenship of that state is lost in the case of acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, or declares in writing his will to renounce the citizenship of another state, when he will be granted the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania.

In order to obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, as in other EU countries, it is necessary to fulfill several conditions:

  • first of all, it is necessary to obtain a temporary residence permit in Lithuania and continue it for 5 years;
  • after the person has extended the temporary residence permit for 5 years, he acquires the right to choose: obtain a permanent residence permit or obtain citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania (passport);

Citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania is obtained in the event that the previously held citizenship is renounced (Lithuanian Law prohibits dual citizenship; it is granted in special cases only by the President of the Republic of Lithuania).
